The postpartum period is such a challenging one. That’s why it’s essential for new moms to focus on taking care of themselves during this time, and having the right postpartum essentials can make a significant difference. I was lucky enough to have a friend with two kids who knew exactly what I’d need. Her gifts were much needed and so helpful!

In this article, I’ll give you the list of the top postpartum essentials, explain why they are beneficial for new moms, and how much to expect to spend on them.

You can also check out this list of breastfeeding essentials I wrote about recently, or check out my list of toddler essentials you’ll be needing in about a year!

Postpartum Essentials for a New Mom

Nursing pads.

High up on my postpartum essentials list are nursing pads, as they’re absolutely vital for breastfeeding mothers. They can help prevent leaks and keep clothing dry. Disposable nursing pads cost around $10-$15 for a pack of 50, while washable nursing pads cost around $20-$25 for a set of 6.

Perineal spray.

Perineal spray can provide relief for new moms who are experiencing discomfort or pain in the perineal area after childbirth. Having had an episiotomy, I knew this was a huge issue for me for the next few weeks. Having a perineal spray made a world of difference.

Good news is, some perineal sprays contain witch hazel, which can help reduce inflammation. Perineal spray costs around $10-$15 per bottle.

Sitz bath.

A sitz bath is a shallow, warm bath that can help soothe soreness and discomfort in the perineal area. Some sitz baths can be used with herbs or oils, which can provide additional relief. A basic sitz bath costs around $10-$15.

Nipple cream.

Nipple cream can help soothe and heal sore or cracked nipples during breastfeeding. Some nipple creams are also safe for babies to ingest, so there is no need to wipe them off before nursing. Nipple cream costs around $10-$15 per tube.

Maternity pads.

Maternity pads are specially designed for postpartum bleeding, which can be heavy for the first few weeks after childbirth. Maternity pads are larger and more absorbent than regular pads. I also found them to be a lot softer and much more comfortable. A pack of 10-12 maternity pads costs around $5-$10.

Postpartum underwear.

Postpartum underwear is designed to provide support and comfort for new moms. It’s especially important as part of C-section postpartum essentials. Some postpartum underwear also has a high waistband to provide additional support for the abdominal area. A pack of postpartum underwear costs around $20-$30.

Comfortable clothing.

Comfortable clothing is essential for postpartum recovery. Loose-fitting tops and pants can provide comfort and allow for easy breastfeeding. Nursing-specific clothing can also provide convenience for breastfeeding moms. Prices for comfortable postpartum clothing can vary widely, from $20-$100 or more per item.

Baby carrier.

A baby carrier can provide convenience and comfort for new moms who want to keep their baby close while keeping their hands free. It was so important for me as I went back to work, and my Ergobaby Baby Wrap is super comfortable and light — and is currently only $39.

Baby carriers can also help promote bonding between parent and baby. Prices for baby carriers vary widely, from $20-$200 or more.

Water bottle.

Last, but not list on my postpartum essentials checklist — yes, a water bottle! Staying hydrated is a must for postpartum recovery, especially for breastfeeding moms. Having a water bottle nearby can help new moms remember to drink enough water throughout the day. Prices for water bottles can vary widely, from $10-$50 or more.

Each of these postpartum essentials can provide significant benefits for new moms during the fourth trimester. From providing you with orelief for physical discomfort to promoting bonding between parent and baby, these items can make a significant difference in postpartum recovery.

While prices for these postpartum essentials can vary widely, there are options available at a range of price points to fit any budget.
